Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap Review

Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap is a game that was originally created for the Sega Master system. You play the role of Wonder Boy who just got cursed by a dragon. It’s one of the games that bring in a cool Metroidvania vibe, while also trying to remake that original game from decades ago. This remake is interesting because it improves on the original title quite a bit as well.

You still have the same story, you have Wonder Boy cursed by the Meka Dragon. He was changed into a lizard man, and now he needs to explore the world, fight bosses spread all over the game world and find a way to break this curse. Each time you defeat a boss, you can actually transform into a new beast. So during the game you will end up transformed in an eagle, mouse and so on. However, as you transform, new parts of the world get opened up, and that alone is very exciting.

The art itself is amazing in this game. The title itself is amazing, and you will find yourself playing only for the art alone many times. It’s definitely visually appealing, distinctive and imposing, not to mention a lot of fun to explore all the unique locations. Another thing to note is that the audio was improved too, the remaster adds FM audio tracks which were not available in the US until now.

In addition, Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap also adds a new interface to make it easier to control this game experience. If you want, you can remove all the inventory, audio and graphic changes for a pure, vanilla experience. It’s great that they did such a thing, since everyone can play the game the way they want on new systems.

Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap removes the original charm system, however it adds new areas to the game. This is a nifty idea and it goes to show the clever features and approach that it brings to the table. The combat in this game is cool, it looks great and it does feel very interesting all the time.

However, there are some frustrating elements too. You will find yourself backtracking often because you need to get back to certain items. That might not seem like a lot at first, but it does end up being a chore for a lot of people. If you get past this type of issue however, you will find Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap to be quite interesting and fulfilling.

Overall, I found Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap to be very fun. It’s a great remake of a cult classic, and the fact that you can actually strip all the new stuff to just play the original version is a nice tough. The game was modernized, it runs flawlessly, and they also updated the graphics to really make it more fun and engaging. It’s well worth a try for anyone that loves platform games!
