Castlevania Anniversary Collection Review

Castlevania is one of the most iconic game series and it continues to attract a lot of people from all over the world. It has a great story, they even created a successful Netflix animation series about it, and the games themselves are timeless classics. The Castlevania Anniversary Collection itself has the original game Castlevania, Castlevania  II, III, IV, Castlevania The Adventure, Castlevania II Belmont’s Revenge, Castlevania Bloodlines, Kid Dracula and History of Castlevania – Book of the Crescent Moon.

There’s quite a lot of content here, and the great thing is that the games were made to work on modern computers. With that being said, the disappointing thing is that nothing was really added, aside from Kid Dracula that was not available in the US up until this point. But if you already played the games, this collection is just optimizing them for modern systems. That’s still great, however you won’t expect any changes to the gameplay or the story as a whole. It might be disappointing for some fans, but if you can get past that particular issue, it can still be quite exhilarating and exciting.

I liked the fact that aside from the games, you also have an ebook which contains the timelines, history and design docs for the game. They also have concept art and all kinds of goodies. It’s nice to see that all of this was preserved and they kept it for players to enjoy, since there’s quite a lot of amazing content and really cool experiences to be had within the entire thing. Within this you can also find a few interviews with people that worked on the game.

What about performance? While playing Castlevania Anniversary Collection, I didn’t experience any performance problems. I was quite impressed with the fact that this game worked flawlessly for what it is, and it did end up bringing in plenty of value as a package. It can still require a bit of getting used to, especially since it’s an emulated game package on Amazon Luna, but I didn’t find any issues. It’s sad to see this is just emulation and they didn’t actually remake it for Luna/PC, but it’s still good enough and as I said, there are no particular issues with the entire emulation and experience. You will find yourself pretty happy with the way it runs and looks, which is what matters the most.

As a package, Castlevania Anniversary Collection is quite impressive. If you already played these games and love them, having everything on all your devices (where Luna is currently accessable) is exciting. It’s even better if you never played any of this, since you have it all in a great package. Sure, the fact that this is an emulation for the games and not a fully fledged Luna/PC port might be disappointing, but if you get past that, you will find Castlevania Anniversary Collection to be very fun and a really exciting game package. If you like retro games, you don’t want to miss this!

Matt started playing games after his Dad won an Nintendo 64 back in the late 90s, enjoying classics such as Super Mario 64, Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. Since then, he’s enjoyed all kinds of games and has always wanted to work with them in some way. He writes about them for Games on Luna and also contributes to other gaming blogs. He's extremely interested in cloud gaming (all platforms) and always talking up the latest news and information on them.
